Euthanasia


INTRO:
-By definition euthanasia is the act of putting to death painlessly or allowing to die, as by withholding extreme medical measures, a person or animal suffering from an incurable, esp. a painful, disease or condition. Also known as a mercy killing. So the question is should such measures be allowed to be taken by human hands.

- euthanasia in ancient greek means “good death”

Reasons given in favor:

Quality of Life:
-The pain and suffering a person feels during a disease, even with pain relievers, can be incomprehensible to a person who has not gone through it.

-Even without considering the physical pain, it is often difficult for patients to overcome the emotional pain of losing their independence.

-and still, despite modern painkillers, there is little available to deal with the problem of 'breathlessness', which makes many ailing patients feel they will suffocate.


Stories:
-In 1992 Dr Cox openly defied the law and assented to 70 year old Mrs Boyes' persistent request for voluntary active euthanasia. Mrs Boyes' was so ill that she "screamed like a dog" if anyone touched her. Conventional medicine did not relieve her agony. In her last days, when she repeatedly requested to die, Dr Cox finally gave her an injection of potassium chloride, bestowing on her the boon of a peaceful death so many of us feel we are entitled to.

-Prior to 1998, Kevorkian only assisted in suicides. He rigged so-called suicide machines that allowed patients to self-administer a lethal dose of drugs. However, on November 23, 1998, 60 Minutes aired a videotape of Kevorkian participating in a more active form of euthanasia. For the first time, he administered the fatal injection himself, ending the life of Thomas Youk, a fifty-twoyear- old who suffered from Lou Gehrig’s disease. On March 26, 1999, a Michigan jury, faced with this videotape evidence, found Kevorkian guilty of murder. The judge in the case did not allow the defense to present testimony about Youk’s pain and suffering, and emphasized that whether the victim consents is legally irrelevant in murder cases.

-according to the Stanford encyclopedia of philosophy, there are Five Individually Necessary Conditions for Candidacy for Voluntary Euthanasia

(1) is suffering from a terminal illness;
(2) is unlikely to benefit from the discovery of a cure for that illness during what remains of her life expectancy;
(3) is, as a direct result of the illness, either suffering intolerable pain, or only has available a life that is unacceptably burdensome.
(4) has an enduring, voluntary and competent wish to die.
(5) is unable without assistance to commit suicide.
-and is it not morally inconsistent to oppose euthanasia and support the death penalty?

-so having presented the facts I'm left to ask this, Should people be forced to stay alive? I say No. And neither the law nor medical ethics requires that "everything be done" to keep a person alive. Insistence, against the patient's wishes, that death be postponed by every means available is contrary to law and practice. It would also be cruel and inhumane. There comes a time when continued attempts to cure are not compassionate, wise, or medically sound. That is the time when all efforts should be placed on making the patient's remaining time comfortable. Then, all interventions should be directed to alleviating pain and other symptoms as well as to the provision of emotional and spiritual support for both the patient and the patient's loved ones. Not on what a distanced government says.
